First off, when we began outlining the concept of WorldShift two years ago, we asked ourselves what was happening with the RTS genre. Lots of details will be covered on the game's website in time, as it's an area that needs a lot of explaining. Well, this and the co-operative multiplayer features are the essence of WorldShift. So, with our interested suitably piqued, we journeyed into the heart of differentiation to talk to lead designer Vesselin Handjiev about the game. ![]() Mix all that into a sci-fi setting with an almost exclusive multiplayer focus revolving around community features and co-operative gameplay, and Black Sea certainly promises something interesting. You'll control tens rather than thousands, and customisation will come in the form of relics and items placed in limited Ability Grid slots to boost your effectiveness - swapping and changing to freshen your tactics or replace old pieces. Unlike its first, celebrated outing Knights of Honor, WorldShift won't clog your fragile brain with expansive tech-trees and unit upgrades it simply wants to drag you straight into the action. ![]() Which is why Bulgarian developer Black Sea Studios came up with a fast-paced and action-orientated RTS when it sat down to think about its next big project. But some observers accuse it of growing rather stale, relying too heavily on the same tried and tested mechanics time and again. It's a well established and hotly contested genre, and you're tall. Some units also have shields able to absorb the strength of an incoming attack partly or entirely. If someone asked you to name a real-time strategy game on PC, you could probably reel off a list as long as your arm. Many units in WorldShift have power which the player can spend to perform special actions such as spells, healing, or stronger attacks. The game is centered on unique cooperative multiplayer gameplay. There is a three-tiered unit system, with outstanding leader units, strong officer units and then more common basic units. The players will gather items as they fight their opponents and as rewards for completing missions. ![]() In WorldShift, there are no technology trees featuring hundreds of upgrades instead, WorldShift allows the players to discover and acquire a vast number of items and powerful relics that they can use to freely change their gameplay and preferred tactics and to attack their enemies. A particular incident was that of three Canadian soldiers beating and raping two Korean women, followed by locking them in a house with several South Korean soldiers and attacking the house with grenades and automatic weapons. Boss went on to cover every major battle in the Korean War involving Canadian forces, including the Battle of Kapyong, the Battle of Chuam-ni and the Battle of Maehwa-San.Ī number of other reporters despised Boss, and even tried to have him removed from Korea, as he refused to censor his content and often wrote about war crimes committed by Canadian troops. Boss was sent to Busan, South Korea with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and immediately wanted to diminish his reliance on military authorities so that he could get to the places we wanted to report from, without censorship. When the war in Korea broke out in 1950 Boss became the leading Canadian journalist and largely shaped the Canadian perception of the war, as many Canadian newspapers at the time relied heavily on the Canadian Press for their coverage. Providing the best user experience possible is a never-ending process. You also need to have a quick way to reset your prototype, when the user goes down an unforeseen path. Prototypes are by nature limited in functionalities, but they still need to offer some degree of freedom for the test to be meaningful: links other than those strictly necessary for the task have to be enabled. Testing low-fidelity prototypes is a good way to identify issues early. Interviews of existing users also gave insightful data, but a few interviewees who had a demo not too long ago obviously repeated the sales pitch, rather than talking from their own experience and point of view. Talking to users who had no previous experience and had not heard of Kusri before was the most valuable. A data collector role already existed, but we streamlined the data collector flow to make it easier and quicker to enter data from participants. Usability testing revealed specific needs for data collectors, who are an essential part of the evaluation process, but are often overlooked. New features were added, and more are planned to facilitate communication between all parties. New user needs and pain points were identified such as the difficulty to communicate their evaluation process to other stakeholders. The research revealed the actual process and generic steps followed by professional evaluators, which informed the new information architecture. ![]() The user flow in the first version of Kusri was too rigid and not adapted to real-life constraints. We adapted the copy of the platform to actual practices. Proper academic wording associated with statistics is not used by professionals in the field. These projects typically use longitudinal studies over the course of one or several years, they involve multiple groups of related participants, they gather both quantitative and qualitative data from a variety of sources (surveys, interviews, focus groups, observation in addition to data that might be available in each context). The discovery of gold in the Witwatersrand in 1885 turned the South African Republic from an impoverished state dominated by farmers to one where fortunes could be made from mining.
